Service Summer Camp is about discovery & exploration - deepening our understanding of who we are in service & celebrating it through sharing and play. We want to create a weekend where we reconnect with the curiosity we had as kids - to feel free to be ourselves, to feel supported, and to make service a "way of being" rather than a "thing to do." You can participate in interactive sharing sessions and workshops, as well as let your inner kid out - Color Wars, capture the flag, morning meditation and yoga, arts & crafts, music, s'mores and stories around the campfire, A.A. meetings, swimming, dancing, and talent show Saturday night!
What to expect: To get out of your comfort zone, supporting others & being supported, laughing till it hurts, making new friends, seeking a deeper connection, vulnerability, goofiness.
What you should not expect: Trainings (for example, on Roberts Rules of Order, responsibilities of a group treasurer, how to conduct a group inventory, etc.) or education around specifics about General Service. Of course, there may be conversations about all these that come up organically, but campers should not expect these as topics for the program. The weekend is about our relationship with service.

There will be free time during the weekend for reflection, rest, fellowship, pool time, and fun. Additional camp amenities include: basketball courts, volleyball, horseshoes, game room with air-hockey, ping pong, and pool table, as well as archery and paintball for an additional fee.
Since there are extensive contractual, liability, and financial obligations associated with minor campers, we cannot (unfortunately) allow those under 18 to participate in Service Summer Camp.
IDYLLWILD PINES CAMP
Located at 5,300 feet in the picturesque San Jacinto Mountains, Idyllwild Pines offers an ideal location to experience the joy of service! There are open meadows, nature trails, and scenic areas for quiet reflection, group discussion, and outdoor games.
Traveling to Camp: Registration begins at 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Last year, many folks indicated that they had hit traffic, arrived after dark, and had difficulty finding camp. We are addressing this by having road signs on the main road to reduce confusion on where to turn, having an A.A. meeting at 5:00 p.m. and a buffet dinner at 6:00 p.m. to encourage early arrivals. You will hit heavy traffic if you leave Los Angeles at 5:00 p.m., so we suggest utilizing Google Maps and adjusting the setting to "Arrive By" or "Depart at" to better plan your trip.
Cabin dorms are equipped with bunk beds, internet accessibility,
and electrical outlets. Dorms sleep 8 people to a room, and are gender-
specific. If you identify as non-binary, gender-fluid, or other identifier and
prefer private accommodations, please email us for availability.
If you know others who will be attending and would like to room with them,
please include their name(s) during registration. Restrooms and showers
are located next door to the cabins.
Sorry, couples rooms are not available during this weekend.
No eating in the dorms, though you may store any dry/non-
perishable food in there if you wish. There is a full kitchen in the
lodge, with a fridge. Please label your items. Throughout the
weekend (and at checkout), everyone is expected to follow this simple camp rule: "Leave it nicer than you found it!"
Since lodging is dorm-style, please be aware of others' need for quiet time. Quiet time in the dorms will vary with the energy and engagement of dorm-mates. However, if you notice campers asleep, take the fun outside the room. If you are a "night owl" and would prefer to dorm with other "night owls," please note this on your completed registration form.
Service Summer Camp will take place in Creekside Camp, with our own Lodge with a fireplace for fellowship during free time and in the evenings. Since outdoor quiet time is at 10:00pm, campers will be encouraged to continue fellowship in the Lodge after that time. Workshops, panels, and sharing sessions will take place in Gilboa Hall and our camp's outdoor ampitheater.
Meals are provided in the mess hall. While we will be dining with other groups staying elsewhere in Idyllwild Pines, we will be assigned our own section of tables for dining together throughout the weekend. Meal times are fixed and cannot be adjusted: Breakfast is at 8:00am, Lunch is at 12:00pm, Dinner is at 5:30pm. A chow bell will ring to announce meal time.
A sample menu includes scrambled eggs, sausage, fresh fruit, cereal and oatmeal for breakfast; tacos, black beans, rice, and salad for lunch; BBQ chicken, vegetable kabobs, salad and Hawaiian sweet rolls for dinner. Vegatarian, Vegan, and gluten-free options available - please note this during registration (online or on your registration form). If you have strict dietary needs, please bring your own food to prepare in full kitchen that will be available in our camp.
Free coffee and tea will be available in the mess hall from 7:00am-7:00pm, in the Lodge beginning at 7:00 a.m. Hot water for tea, hot cocoa, and instant coffee will be available in the Lodge after 9:00pm.

Although we are still developing the weekend program, there will be multiple workshops, panels, and sharing sessions to choose from. Here is a sample schedule - actual program will be available closer to the event:

Here are some activities planned for the weekend:
All Service Summer Camp Color War! Everyone is divided into teams and assigned a color which you'll receive prior to arriving at camp - You bring your color (clothing, socks, costumes, whatever - be creative!) and team spirit, and we’ll bring the water balloons! Compete in team relay races & games like 3-legged race, hula hoop pass, and tug-o-war, Family Feud trivia and more. The winning team is announced during the Farewell Meeting on Sunday.
Arts & Crafts - sober style! Tie Dye, friendship bracelets, "GOD(Good Orderly Direction)'s Eyes.
Campfires & S'mores: Fellowship around the campfire with stories, music, and s'mores.
Talent/No-Talent show: Show us your magic tricks, singing, skits, comedy, juggling or lip-syncing skills, or ventriloquism!
Spirit Fire: Our main meeting on Saturday night is a night of celebration - sobriety countdown, a visit from the Spirit Fire Oracle, and two great speakers. Join us beforehand for hot cocoa, music, and fellowship!
Camp Amenities: Idyllwild Pines has many activities available, including nature trails, archery, and horseshoes. Here's a list of additional activities they offer - some, like archery, are available with an additional charge.
WHAT TO BRING
Sheets, blankets, and/or sleeping bag
Camping chair for field games and campfire meeting on Saturday night
Refillable water bottle & Coffee mug
Your favorite snacks
Bathing suit (pool, Zoom Flume)
Casual active-wear for field-games (capture the flag, relay races, tug-of-war in mud pit, etc.)
Warm clothing for the evening as temperatures get cooler
Team spirit in your team color (this will be emailed closer to event) - e.g. socks, hat, tutu, costume, etc.
A.A. books if you'd like, and journal and pen.
Consider bringing: musical instruments, earplugs, camping chair, costumes and props for the Talent show, money for snack machine or activities requiring extra fee (archery, paintball), a small meaningful token to place in sharing circle (you can take it back after : ).
DO NOT BRING pets, firearms, tents, or camping vehicles. Smoking is permitted only in designated areas with ash containers.
Check-in begins on Friday, August 30, from 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. You may want to plan on arriving as close to 3:00 p.m. as possible to account for traffic leaving Los Angeles, and so you don't have to look for the camp in the dark.
Check-in and registration location at camp will be emailed closer to the date. At check-in, participants will get their cabin/dorm assignment, weekend program, name badge and lanyard, and sign a liability waiver. Service Summer Camp counselors will be available to assist campers with bringing their belongings to cabins. Participants will be required to attend a brief orientation in the evening on the first day of camp regarding camp rules and safety issues. Participants must receive this orientation, so please inform us if you expect to arrive after the opening Welcome Celebration which will begin (tentatively) at 8:00 p.m. Friday night.
All Service Summer Camp participants must be out of their dorms and the camp after Sunday lunch by 1:00pm on Sunday. This means that "All Camp Cleanup" will begin at 11:00am (before lunch) - you are responsible for packing your belongings; checking your bunk and area is clean and all garbage and debris is removed; taking with you or disposing of food items from dorm, fridge, or kitchen; arranging for assistance from Summer Camp counselors to the parking area, if needed; and completing check-out prior to departure by 1:00pm. Combined Hollywood Districts will do its best to identify any items left behind at camp and will send an email out to participants - however, items remaining unclaimed after that time may be disposed of.
Although we hope that everyone who cares to is able to join us at summer camp, the camp does not have accessibility for wheelchairs or similar mobility-assistance devices. There will be some walking involved throughout the weekend - such as to attend meals in the mess hall across camp, and workshops, sharing sessions, and meetings are a short walk from our camp (Creekside Camp).
Safety during all Combined Hollywood events, throughout A.A. and our service structure is vital to recovery. We strive to create events and environments that uphold the values and principles of our program - respect, integrity, accountability, and compassion.

Participants can register by mail or online. Registration includes: 2 nights' lodging, 6 meals (Friday dinner, 3 meals Saturday, Sunday breakfast & lunch), coffee and tea for the entire weekend, s'mores on Friday & Saturday night, and all other Service Summer Camp workshops, panels, and activities.

Mail-In Registration: Please request a registration form to print and mail with check or money order payable to "The Combined Hollywood Districts," PO Box 480993, Los Angeles, CA 90048. Mail in registrations must be postmarked by August 10th.
Online Registration: Online registrations are available through PayPal for your convenience. There is a small additional fee ($4.00) which will be included in the cost of your ticket. Online registration deadline EXTENDED to August 19th.
Need a scholarship? We want everyone to join us for this incredible weekend! That might not be possible, but we hope finances won't be the barrier.
